George Washington’s Teeth

Friday, April 29th, 2011

While visiting my sister Joanne in Sarasota, Florida, recently, I came across a book her husband Marshall was reading entitled, “Washington – A Life,” by Ron Chernow.

Interestingly, a chapter was devoted to his struggle with his dentures and his relationship with his dentist, who played a major role in his life, as they became close friends through President Washington’s struggle to keep his teeth in.    As they did not have impression materials back in the day, the fit of the denture was determined by the dentist’s ability to carve and sand the underside of the denture.  As might be expected, it affected President Washington’s ability to eat and give speeches, and was a major concern and frequent source of embarrassment to him.

Fortunately, today, with the materials we have, including dental implants, we are able to secure both the upper and lower dentures in a manner that makes them feel like one’s own teeth.  Please let us know if you or a family member or friend could use our help, so that they don’t have to feel like President Washington did!

Give Your Teeth a Spring Cleaning

Monday, April 25th, 2011

With Springtime in the air, and the Cleveland Indians back on track, we hope you will consider visiting Amy and Barbara, our hygienists, to give your teeth a “Spring cleaning,”   It’s always important to keep your regular appointments with them, as they not only give your teeth a sparkling look but also do an oral cancer screening, as well as watching for gum and bone problems and decay.  With the help of digital radiography (i.e. digital x-rays), they can do a thorough evaluation.   Digital radiography uses 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays (it’s like being out in the sun for only two or three minutes).  Importantly, it allows us to be better diagnosticians and minimize your dental treatment.  Going back to the Tribe, it’s even better than a scouting report.

Don’t “wait till next year” (a favorite saying of Cleveland Indians fans) to see Amy and Barbara!!! Contact us to schedule an appointment.

Learn More About Our New Navigator Laser

Monday, April 11th, 2011

We love our new Navigator laser.  Wendy and I just spent time at the Ivolclar company in Buffalo getting advanced training on it and are even more thrilled with the opportunities with it; from gum contouring to help with painless canker sore removal.  For more on how the Navigator laser, watch our appearance on WKYC’s “Good Company” in the video window below. Please ask us how it can be used in your dental care!

New Dental Technologies from Cleveland dentist, Dr. Marsh

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Last week we were visited by WKYC “Good Company” Channel 3 reporter Joe Cronauer, who asked us to feature some of the newest techniques in dentistry (watch the segment in the video window below).  I showed Joe our latest purchase, the Odyssey Navigator Intraoral Laser, which can be used for gum contouring, removal of some oral lesions, and even treatment of canker sores.  The laser is portable and often can be used even without “Novacaine!”  If you’d like to see it or how it can help you, please let a member of our staff here know, and we’ll be glad to show you.

We also demonstrated our Cadent Itero digital impression technique for Mr. Cronauer. He was amazed at the accuracy and comfort of the procedure which eliminates the goopy impression material.  He said he couldn’t wait to share the concept with his WKYC family, as well as his own family. Please share it with yours!!

Salt Can Prevent Harmful Bacteria

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

At a conference we attended recently in San Diego, put on by the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, we attended a presentation/course focused on gum disease in the Middle East that has application here in the United States.  Due to poor home care, often because of  lack  of toothpaste and toothbrushes (from both financial and availability reasons), there is an abundance of a bacteria (A.A.) that can cause young people to lose teeth prematurely, especially in the upper front area. This, in turn, leads to poor self esteem.  The dental community’s response is to educate young women to use salt on their fingers that they can rub on the gums and emerging teeth of their infants and small children. This can help prevent the harmful effects of the bacteria. (Interestingly, sea salt and Kosher salt seem to be most effective!).

When we advise our  Cleveland patients to use a baking soda type of toothpaste (i.e. Arm and Hammer’s peroxide and baking soda tubes), we are suggesting that it, too, is effective in fighting the bacteria that cause gum disease.

Learn From Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s Dental Troubles

Monday, January 31st, 2011

A number of people asked/commented on congressman Dennis Kucinich and his broken tooth (he apparently bit on an olive pit in a “wrap” and broke a tooth that was an “anchor” for a bridge).  They wanted to know if things like that happened often and what could be done to avoid it.  Our response has been that whether you have your own teeth, crowns, or even dentures,  you need to stay away from things like popcorn kernels, ice cubes, and yes, even the dreaded olive pit – whenever possible.

Fortunately, with today’s dentistry – both general and cosmetic -  we can often fix the problem in an esthetic and rather easy manner!

Office Using New Portable Laser

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

We are very excited about our new portable laser, the Navigator from Odyssey.  We’ve been using it for gum contouring and crown lengthening.  It can also be used for apthous ulcers/canker sores.  It takes seconds to use, with virtually no pain or sensitivity, and the healing is great.  The laser has been demonstrated at a number of international dental meetings, including the AACD and ACE dental conferences.  Our patients have been thrilled with the procedures and results – as much as a dental patient can, anyway….
