When to Remove Wisdom Teeth

Monday, June 27th, 2011

When summer comes around, and our high school and college students are on break, I always get a lot of questions about wisdom teeth and whether or not they should be extracted/”come out.”  Each patient/case should be looked at on an individual basis, though  in general, I am conservative on their removal. Factors that need to be looked at include:

  • The age and health of the patient
  • Room in the arch
  • The angle of eruption – or non-eruption – on teeth that are impacted (i.e. unable to come in due to being blocked by adjacent teeth)
  • The position of the mandibular nerve (that runs below and/or adjacent to the wisdom tooth)
  • The bone and tissue surrounding the tooth

If you have any questions, or would like yourself or your student to be evaluated, please call our office at 1-440-461-1003 or contact us here and let us know.

New Flatscreen TVs in the Treatment & Reception Rooms

Monday, June 20th, 2011

We’ve received some nice feedback on our newsletter (where we highlighted our blogs). We would welcome any thoughts on topics we might cover here or in future newsletters on our office and your Cleveland dental care.

An item we mentioned in “Smile Update” was our new flatscreen monitors in the treatment and reception rooms. They are DVD capable, so we are able to watch anything from dental techniques, which we have shown on NBC/Channel 3’s “Golden Opportunities,” “Good Company,” and their brand-new Saturday morning show “It’s About You!” to movies and TV shows for longer appointments.  Just let us know what you would like to watch!

Oral Cancer Exam A Regular Part of Our Check-Ups

Monday, June 13th, 2011

We like to get hugs, and recently we got a hug from a husband and wife, when we detected a tumor on the woman’s tongue  that she had not known about.   She was a new patient of ClevelandSmiles, and had seen a number of physicians and dentists who were unable to diagnose her problem, being focused on a number of other oral issues that she had.  As you know, the oral cancer exam is part of our patient examination during both the new patient exam and regular dental check-ups.  We are happy to report that she is being treated for this problem, and her outlook seems good.  If you have any lesion or growth that concerns you, please let our dental staff know!!!

Additional Copies of Cleveland Smiles Magazine

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

We have had some very nice feedback on our latest newsletter and have had a number of requests for additional copies. If you would like a copy for family members and friends, please call Afsaneh or Karin.  Also, if you’d like to see us feature any procedure or technique, from laser gum contouring to porcelain veneers to digital x-rays, please let us know and we’ll work on including it in the next copy of ClevelandSmiles magazine.

Give Your Teeth a Spring Cleaning

Monday, April 25th, 2011

With Springtime in the air, and the Cleveland Indians back on track, we hope you will consider visiting Amy and Barbara, our hygienists, to give your teeth a “Spring cleaning,”   It’s always important to keep your regular appointments with them, as they not only give your teeth a sparkling look but also do an oral cancer screening, as well as watching for gum and bone problems and decay.  With the help of digital radiography (i.e. digital x-rays), they can do a thorough evaluation.   Digital radiography uses 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays (it’s like being out in the sun for only two or three minutes).  Importantly, it allows us to be better diagnosticians and minimize your dental treatment.  Going back to the Tribe, it’s even better than a scouting report.

Don’t “wait till next year” (a favorite saying of Cleveland Indians fans) to see Amy and Barbara!!! Contact us to schedule an appointment.

Happy Birthday Fred Griffith

Fred Griffith

Happy Birthday Fred Griffith!

Cleveland icon (and patient) Fred Griffith, who has been on both WEWS ABC/channel 5 (“The Morning Exchange”) and WKYC NBC/channel 3 for more that 50 years, just celebrated his 82nd birthday! He was feted on “Good Company” last month with an extra-large cake.  Congratulations Fred!!!

Join Our Wall of Fame

Monday, February 7th, 2011

We’ve recently had a number of patients featured in both articles and photos in “The Cleveland Plain Dealer,” “Cleveland Magazine,” and the “Currents” edition of “The Sun Press,”  “The Sun Messenger,” and the internet.  When we see them, we try and print/cut them out and put them on our bulletin board.  If you or your family are noted in these publications or any other one, please let us know so that you, too, can join our “wall of fame.”

Friend and Patient Nancy Curtiss Appears on WKYC’s Golden Opportunities

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

On Sunday, January 23rd, 2011, our patient Nancy Curtiss will appear with us on “Golden Opportunities” at 11:30 am (Now that the Cleveland Browns’ season is mercifully over the show returns to its earlier time).

Nancy, who has been a patient in our practice for nearly 30 years, talks with host Armond Budish about the importance of regular care and the maintenance of her smile.  She’s always been diligent about her home care and her exam/hygiene appointments.  She is a wonderful example of someone who has worked hard to maintain her teeth and smile, requiring minimal treatment. Thanks for your loyalty, Nancy!

It should be both entertaining and informative. Be sure to tune in to Ch. 3 Sunday at 11:30 am.

VIDEO: Office Featured in WKYC News Story on Silver Fillings

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Did you catch us on TV last night? We made the 11 PM news.

Last night WKYC Channel 3 reporter Monica Robbins visited the office, and interviewed us with patient Yvonne Kellogg for our views on concerns with amalgam/silver fillings (for the record, we stopped using silver fillings almost fifteen years ago). Although the American Dental Association and the FDA have already determined that the level of mercury in amalgam fillings is at a safe level, the FDA is currently investigating further on the safety in their use and handling.

You can watch the complete news story in the video window below or on WKYC’s website here. If you have any questions about amalgam fillings, please do not hesitate to contact us. Check out our other Television appearances here.

Get your routine dental checkup before they go back to school

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

As we begin August, it’s always a good reminder to have your children or grandchildren visit our Cleveland dental office for their routine dental check up while they still have some free time before cheerleading, football and other activities begin. Routine dental check ups are not only more convenient for your schedule during the summer, but getting them sooner than later can help avoid pain and discomfort if cavities or other issues are found. Also, please let us know if you have any special needs or would like to schedule a cosmetic dental procedure or teeth whitening so that we can accommodate!

Speaking of sports, I should take a moment to remind you that we do make custom mouth guards to protect your child’s teeth while they’re on the field and in the gym. Our custom mouth guards can even be made in the colors of their respective schools and teams! (We made plenty of them over the years, including those made for Cleveland’s professional indoor soccer teams, The Cleveland Force and the Cleveland Crunch).
