On a very serious note, over the past few months we have seen a number of our patients who are being treated for very forms of cancer, including one patient who we diagnosed with oral cancer, localized in her tongue, and another with a large tumor in an area just behind the lower jaw.
As you know, part of our examination of our patients includes a cancer screening, often done following your dental hygiene appointment. We take this part of your recare/recall appointment very seriously.
In addition to making referrals to the appropriate oral surgeon and/or physician, we often recommend the use of a highly flouridated toothpaste, such as Previdental 5000 and Prevident 5000 booster. They are by prescription and should be used nightly to combat dry-mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and tissue sloughing, which are often consequences of radiation treatment and chemotherapy used to fight the cancer. These toothpastes can also be used for our patients with diabetes and those people taking medications for high blood pressure, who may also suffer from dry-mouth.
If you or people you know need our help, please know that we are available for them!

As we move into the fall season, with the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns both in action, we’re reminded that it’s a good idea for our athletes to wear mouth guards when they, too, are at play – whether for baseball, football, or even weightlifting. They can be custom-made in our office with the help of a good impression in the colors of your favorite team. But if you can’t make it in, the “boil and bite” guards, found in sporting goods stores like Dick’s are a fairly good substitute. Please let us know if we can help!

At a conference we attended recently in San Diego, put on by the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, we attended a presentation/course focused on gum disease in the Middle East that has application here in the United States. Due to poor home care, often because of lack of toothpaste and toothbrushes (from both financial and availability reasons), there is an abundance of a bacteria (A.A.) that can cause young people to lose teeth prematurely, especially in the upper front area. This, in turn, leads to poor self esteem. The dental community’s response is to educate young women to use salt on their fingers that they can rub on the gums and emerging teeth of their infants and small children. This can help prevent the harmful effects of the bacteria. (Interestingly, sea salt and Kosher salt seem to be most effective!).
When we advise our Cleveland patients to use a baking soda type of toothpaste (i.e. Arm and Hammer’s peroxide and baking soda tubes), we are suggesting that it, too, is effective in fighting the bacteria that cause gum disease.

Question… “Even though “Novocain” is great during the procedure because I don’t feel anything, having a numb face for an hour after I leave is very inconvenient. Novocain sometimes upsets my stomach, and I am unable to eat or drink my coffee comfortably. I also find myself biting my tongue and the insides of my cheeks often. Is there a way to make the effects of Novocain wear off faster?”
Answer… This is a question that I receive quite often in my office. Some people say, “I heard that if you increase blood flow with exercise or rinse with warm salt water the effects will wear off faster.” Unfortunately, all these techniques will do it leave you tired, salty and still numb. But I’m excited to tell you that we have a new medication to relieve numbness with an “anti-anesthetic” called “Oraverse.” I recently met with the company’s CEO in August and had the privilege of being one of the first dental offices to use it. Our first patient absolutely loved it! It quickly and effectively removed the numbing sensation and allowed her to get back to her everyday routine – and as a physician who needed to get back to her patients, she was most appreciative and very excited to know of this new technique.
If you are interested in using “Ovaverse” during you next visit, just let us know.
