Routine Checkups Can Save Lives

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Not too long ago one of our patients sent us a note regarding our diagnosis of his wife’s cancer, which I picked up on a routine screening of her mouth and tongue. He credits the diagnosis as “saving his wife’s life.”

As we often point out, cancer screening is one more reason it is so important for our patients to keep their regular appointments.  Even though we may be known as one of Cleveland’s leading dental offices for general and cosmetic dentistry, we make cancer screening part of every hygiene exam, along with a periodontal examination and search for decay and broken fillings.
We wish our patient a healthy recovery following both surgery and radiation therapy for her oral cancer.

We’re Going to be Featured on Angie’s List!

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Who is Angie and what is her list?

Angie’s List is one of the most reputable and comprehensive service provider lists online. Companies can’t pay to be on Angie’s List, they have to be accepted based on referrals from real customers.

So starting in the next month or so, we’ll be one of the featured dentist offices in Cleveland on Angie’s List.  After being listed in Cleveland Magazine as one of Cleveland’s “Top Dentists of 2011,” and being recommended to Angie’s List by a number of our patients, we were asked to join a select group of general/cosmetic dentist offices with a presence on their website www.Angieslist.com.  We appreciate the support given to us by our patients and will also try our best to earn and keep your trust!

Top Dentists

Monday, August 29th, 2011

In a letter we received on August 1st,  we were honored to find out that we have been selected by a vote of our peers to be included in the list of “Top Cleveland Dentists” which will be published in the October issue of  “Cleveland Magazine.” The honor is shared with our wonderful staff, including Afsaneh, Karin, Amy, Marilyn, Suzanne, and Wendy, as well as part-timers Shirley, Barbara, and Jill; as you might expect, it is especially gratifying.  And, of course, we couldn’t have done it without you, our patients!!

Back to School!

Monday, August 15th, 2011

With school rapidly approaching (Summer always seems to go by so quickly, doesn’t it?), we have some appointment times reserved for your children and grandchildren… and for teachers, too! Just let us know when and we’ll do our best to get them/you in to see us. And speaking of teachers, our patient Sara Logan did a marvelous job on WKYC/Channel 3’s Golden Opportunities.

Please remember that we begin our day at 7am, Monday through Friday, for those of you who like to get in and out before you start your regular day. Call Karin or Afsaneh so that they can help you out!

Receive Wonderful Care From Our Dental Hygienists

Monday, July 4th, 2011

In order to accommodate all of our patients, family, and friends, your office here at ClevelandSmiles is fortunate to have a number of very capable and enthusiastic dental hygienists.   They include Amy B., who has been with us on a full-time basis for seven years, and Barbara G., and Jill O., who work with us  a couple of days per week.  All three women have excellent skills, training and provide wonderful care.  If you would like to see one of them in particular, please let Afsaneh and Karin know so that we may fulfill your request.  Having such a wonderful staff is especially important during this time of year when students are home from school.

Speaking of school, and colleges in particular, we are proud of a number of high school seniors who have graduated and, in some cases, are moving on to college.  Miami University (my undergraduate alma mater) and The Ohio State University (where I attended dental school) are popular choices, though we also have patients who were accepted to schools including Princeton and Duke.  Our congratulations go out to all the graduates!

Oral Cancer Exam A Regular Part of Our Check-Ups

Monday, June 13th, 2011

We like to get hugs, and recently we got a hug from a husband and wife, when we detected a tumor on the woman’s tongue  that she had not known about.   She was a new patient of ClevelandSmiles, and had seen a number of physicians and dentists who were unable to diagnose her problem, being focused on a number of other oral issues that she had.  As you know, the oral cancer exam is part of our patient examination during both the new patient exam and regular dental check-ups.  We are happy to report that she is being treated for this problem, and her outlook seems good.  If you have any lesion or growth that concerns you, please let our dental staff know!!!

Learn About Our Digital X-Ray System

Monday, June 6th, 2011

We frequently get asked questions about our digital x-ray system. Here are some facts:

  • It has 90% less radiation than conventional dental x-rays; a full set of radiographs is similar to 2-3 minutes in the sun.
  • We always use a lead shield for our patients, one that has a thyroid collar as part of the coverage to minimize any unnecessary exposure.
  • Radiographs are important to look for bone disease, decay between teeth, and other important landmarks.

Gratefully, the digital x-ray system enables us to be better diagnosticians!

Additional Copies of Cleveland Smiles Magazine

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

We have had some very nice feedback on our latest newsletter and have had a number of requests for additional copies. If you would like a copy for family members and friends, please call Afsaneh or Karin.  Also, if you’d like to see us feature any procedure or technique, from laser gum contouring to porcelain veneers to digital x-rays, please let us know and we’ll work on including it in the next copy of ClevelandSmiles magazine.

New Issue of “Smile Update” Newsletter Available

Please check your mailbox for our Spring/Summer edition of our newsletter “Smile Update.” I’ve tried to highlight some of the important news in both our office and in Cleveland dentistry/cosmetic dentistry.  We invite you to share your copy with friends and family, and we would be glad to send you additional copies if you would like.  It will also be on our website later this month, along with previous issues. Please let me know what you would like to see featured in future issues.

George Washington’s Teeth

Friday, April 29th, 2011

While visiting my sister Joanne in Sarasota, Florida, recently, I came across a book her husband Marshall was reading entitled, “Washington – A Life,” by Ron Chernow.

Interestingly, a chapter was devoted to his struggle with his dentures and his relationship with his dentist, who played a major role in his life, as they became close friends through President Washington’s struggle to keep his teeth in.    As they did not have impression materials back in the day, the fit of the denture was determined by the dentist’s ability to carve and sand the underside of the denture.  As might be expected, it affected President Washington’s ability to eat and give speeches, and was a major concern and frequent source of embarrassment to him.

Fortunately, today, with the materials we have, including dental implants, we are able to secure both the upper and lower dentures in a manner that makes them feel like one’s own teeth.  Please let us know if you or a family member or friend could use our help, so that they don’t have to feel like President Washington did!
