You might not have heard of Elwood Edwards, but if you’re over the age of 20, you heard his voice way more often than you realize. Edwards, 64, was the voice behind AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail,” and anytime you logged into your AOL account he was the one that greeted you.

Twenty-five years ago Edwards recorded four phrases for AOL, never realizing how iconic they were to become:

  • You’ve Got Mail
  • Welcome
  • File’s Done
  • Goodbye

I’ve come to know Edwards over the years as I’ve made regular appearances on WKYC’s “Golden Opportunities” – he’s a cameraman and makes graphics for the Channel 3 website – and would like to congratulate him on his retirement from WKYC Channel 3. Announcing his retirement, he was then featured on The Today Show, an organization for which he hopes to do voiceovers.

Congratulations on retirement, Elmore!
